six haikus

   I thought I loved you
because you were a sunset,
tired hues fading fast

I understand now
you're the furthest thing from dark;
you're the furthest thing

From all the goodbyes
I thought I would always know
in my skin and bones

The truth: your heart is
a paper mache star, much
lighter than it looks

And I am wishing
on it knowing I am strong
enough to carry

In my small, bare hands
the wishes that need to feel
safe first to take flight.
